20 March - Final Verdict

We were up at 05:00 (lots of early wakeups this trip) to get cleaned up and packed for our return trip.  We were ready at 05:50, and saw Julian come in right as we arrived in the lobby.  The same guy who was working yesterday afternoon and evening was here this morning, so we wondered how long his shift was.  Thankfully there was little traffic on the way to the airport (it was around sunrise), and no rain today.  Julian commented we made his job easy - we’d already checked in, we had our boarding passes, and we had no luggage to check.  He basically just showed up to ride shotgun in the car.

We got to the airport (our tenth time at the Bogotá airport) around 06:30.  Our flight wasn’t until almost 10:00, so we had plenty of time.  Crystal made it through the biometric scanner without issue this time, but nonetheless got flagged for random security screening.  We killed time in the lounge, but for a lounge of the main airline, in the capital, it was pretty lame.  You can’t serve yourself hot food, and there was no booze - we felt like we were being treated like little kids.  Again, first world problems.  We noted there was an Avianca flight to Madrid, so we filed that away for the next time we come to Colombia, especially if we come during a time of year where there isn’t the United flight from Tenerife to New York.

We’d guessed pretty well on how much money to get, as we ended up with 50k (about €12) remaining when everything was said and done.  Just before 09:00 we went to the gate.  Three times in five minutes they checked our passport and boarding pass, which was pretty annoying.  The US (and UK) need to get over their self importance.  We were in the bulkhead at the very front of the plane, as we’d been upgraded for the first leg of our flight home.  The beginning of the flight was basically the reverse of the route we did yesterday, and we saw Santa Marta, actually recognizing what we were seeing.  We also had really nice views over Cuba and The Bahamas (particularly the latter).

In New York, we once again made quick work of getting from one gate to the other, particularly since we were the first ones off the plane.  From exiting the plane to entering the lounge was only 15-20 minutes.  We watched a bit of March Madness at the lounge; Justin also went into the terminal and called his parents, since he was temporarily in the US and could just call rather than FaceTime.  The flight from New York to Tenerife was fairly standard, with nothing particularly noteworthy.  They fed us twice, which seemed unnecessary on a redeye flight that was only 7 hours long.  Once we landed, we made the first 10 bus from the airport to Santa Cruz, and we didn’t have to wait very long in Santa Cruz or in Puerto for connections, so we were back home before 10am.

We enjoyed Colombia quite a bit.  We visited a bunch of incredible sites, many of which were completely unique from one another.  It's kind of amazing that everything we saw on this trip was less than a 2 hour flight from Bogotá.  Colombia is way up there in terms of which country we'd choose if we were going to be confined to one country for the rest of our lives - there would be a ton to do, a lot of climates and topographies to choose from, good food, and a good culture.  We visited 12 of the Colombian states (Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Capital District, Cundinamarca, Guainia, Huila, Magdalena, Meta, Quindío, Tolima, and Vichada) in our three weeks.  And there are still a couple of places we’d very much like to visit, such as Mompox and Guajira and the San Andrés islands (and maybe Ciuadad Perdida and Cali as well).  We'll see how long it takes until we return.
